Cuts to ODA Research funding

Posted by:

Dear colleagues, if you have previously applied to Global Challenges Research (GCRF) or Newton funding? Please be aware that these funding might be affected by the planned government cuts to Official Development Assistance (ODA) funding. As a result, these cuts also affect other UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding which would typically require ODA/GCRF co-funding.

Following the chancellor’s decision to drop overseas aid spending from 0.7% to 0.5% of gross national income. UKRI has confirmed a reduction in the ODA budget that will lead initially to a £120 million shortfall for 2021–22. This means cuts to funds already committed to cutting-edge research collaborations between UK universities and leading international partners. The scale of the planned reduction will result in the termination of existing and future research projects.

Further details of the can be found in this letter.
