Hedgehog Awareness Week Timetable 2024

As a gold accredited Hedgehog Friendly Campus, we wanted to celebrate the work we do and provide opportunities for staff and students to get involved! Hedgehog Awareness begins on the 5th of May, so have put together a timetable of events to take place on campus from the 7th-10th of May, and we hope to see lots of you there! All events are free, but we do have fundraising activities where we hope to raise as much money as possible for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society!

Hedgehog Friendly Gold Award

Tuesday 7th May- 10:00-11:30:  Hedgehog House Workshop

  • SEE, Makerspace

Want to have a go at building your own hedgehog house? Come down to the Maker space where they will show us how they will use precut materials to build our own hedgehog houses. After the session you can take them home with you or put them out in the field. There are limited spaces available, so use the link to book.

Tuesday 7th May- 12:00-13:00: Hedgehog Friendly Litter Pick

  • Peel Park Ranger Base

Helping to keep our campus clear of litter that could be harmful to hedgehogs is important to us, which is why we have regular litter picks. This week’s litter pick will focus mainly on campus and Wallness Lane.

Wednesday 8th May-10:00-13:00: Hedgehog Fundraising Stall

  • Maxwell Foyer

Ran in collaboration with our accreditor Hog Friendly, this stall will aim to raise awareness and money for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. As well as lots of information, there might be one or two hedgehog themed goodies you could take away with you!

Wednesday 8th May-13:00-15:00: Hedgehog Friendly Workshop: Intro to Wildlife Surveying with Holly Broadhurst

  • Campus

Ran by Postdoc Researcher Holly Broadhurst, this session will start by meeting in Peel 107 to introduce the session, before heading out into Peel Park and the Meadows to set out monitoring equipment to gain an understanding of hedgehogs on our campus.

Thursday 9th May-12:00-13:00: Sustainable Campaigns Event with Hog Friendly

  • Online – Microsoft Teams

This event will also be running alongside out auditors, Hog Friendly. This one will be particularly good for those wishing to look at hedgehogs in any research projects. The session will involve some background information on why we need to look after hedgehogs and why their population numbers are in decline. Planning resources will also be given out to help facilitate students research projects. Link TBC

Friday 10th May- 12:00-14:00

  • University House

To fundraise for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, we will be hosting a hedgehog themed bake stall in the foyer of Uni House. Donations of baked goods are accepted, but if baking isn’t for you- you can still come down and donate!

If you are thinking of donating baked goods you won’t need to list the allergens, but here is some general food guidance: https://www.food.gov.uk/safety-hygiene/providing-food-at-community-and-charity-events. The recipe needs to be from a reputable source and not contain raw egg – so no hedgehog mousse please!

Any degree of baking skills are welcome, and all of the donations will go towards preserving our prickly friends across the UK!
