Welcome to Salford! Starting your journey at the University of Salford is one thing you’d entirely love, and there’s so much to discover in and around the campus. Whether you’re new to the city or just looking for some tips on where to go first with your new friends or alone, here’s a guide to some must-see spots.
1. Explore your campus
Getting to know your campus is crucial. Whether you’re at Peel Park, MediaCity, or Frederick Road campus, take some time to wander around and familiarise yourself with the buildings and facilities. This will make navigating to your classes a lot easier, and you’ll also discover some great spots to study or hang out with friends. You can also check out the other campuses just for fun.
2. MediaCity
MediaCity was the first place I visited, and I highly recommend it! It’s particularly magical in the evening when the area is beautifully lit up. The best part? With your University of Salford’s ID card, you can catch the free 50 bus that takes you straight to MediaCity. Once there, you can enjoy the waterfront, grab a bite to eat, check out the Lowry, or even catch a glimpse of the BBC and ITV studios.
3. Arndale Centre
In just 25-minutes, you can walk from the Peel Park campus to the Arndale Centre, the heart of retail in Manchester. It’s perfect for those days when you need a break from studying or a new outfit for a night out. With a wide range of shops, food courts, and even entertainment options, it’s a great place to spend a leisurely afternoon alone or with friends.
4. The parks in Salford
Salford boasts of some beautiful parks perfect for a morning jog or an afternoon picnic when the sun is out. Peel Park, right on campus, is a serene spot for a quick escape into nature between classes. Other notable parks include Buile Hill Park and Lightoaks Park, each offering their own unique charm and plenty of green space to relax and unwind.
5. Galleries
If you’re into art and history, Salford has some great galleries to explore. The Salford Museum and Art Gallery is right near the Peel Park campus and offers a fascinating glimpse into local history and art. For a more modern and extensive experience, you can head to the Imperial War Museum North at MediaCity using the free 50 bus. It’s not just about war history; the architecture and exhibits are truly impressive too.
6. Salford Shopping Centre
Salford Shopping Centre is another convenient spot to check out. It’s close to campus and offers a variety of stores for all your essentials. It’s often easier and quicker to pop over here than to head all the way into Manchester, especially for those last-minute needs.
7. Local Cafes and Restaurants
Salford has a growing food scene with plenty of local cafes and restaurants to explore, you’ll find most of them situated on Chapel Street. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty breakfast, a quick coffee, or an evening meal, you’ll find something to suit your taste. Don’t forget to check out if they offer student discounts!
So, there you have it—some of the first things to explore when you arrive in Salford. If you want some tips on free places you can visit you can check here. Enjoy your time here, make the most of your university experience, and happy exploring!
