Connection between your morning coffee, heartbeat and global trade explored in new book from Salford academics

Two Salford Business School colleagues, Dr Mandeep Saini and Shalu Saini, have co-authored a book delving into the invisible systems powering our world.

The Hidden Network of Everything: The Secret System that Powers the World (and Your Life!), which is available now on Amazon, explores the systems for which are critical to powering our planet, but that we don’t actually see.

From the supply chains behind our morning coffee to the technology shaping global trade, and even the biological logistics within our own bodies, the fascinating book uses engaging storytelling and real-world examples to open our eyes to and simplify complex ideas.

Mandeep, Lecturer in Supply Chains, Procurement and Project Management at Salford Business School, commented: “Shalu and I are thrilled to finally launch our book, which was a collaborative effort that combined months of research, writing, editing and refining the narrative to make complex ideas feel simple, relatable and powerful.”

The book is aimed primarily at Business Management students, as well as industry professionals working in the global operations, logistics and supply chain sectors, plus anyone curious about how the world really works. The book breaks down complex concepts into engaging stories and has already received five-star reviews from readers, praising it as accessible, practical and thought-provoking.

Mandeep continued: “The idea for the book was sparked when we were preparing to teach the Global Operations, Logistics and Supply Chain Optimisation (GOLSCO) module. We wanted to create engaging learning material for our students, but something beyond a typical textbook and that was much more digestible.

“So, we took a different approach, writing a book that is full of stories, real-life examples, and practical insights that connect supply chains, operations and logistics to everyday life. As we continued writing, we realised this book wasn’t just for students, it’s for anyone who wants to see the hidden connections that shape our world.”

Mandeep concludes: “The book focuses on personal mastery using nature, business and ancient philosophy lessons, uncovering the secret supply chains running through our bodies, brains and the world around us. Seeing these hidden systems can change how we think and work and, once people start recognising these patterns, they can use them to improve decision-making, efficiency and even productivity.

“The book is rooted in global insights, blending my experiences from the UK, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Spain and more, making the invisible world of logistics, operations and life systems come alive. It’s not just a book about logistics, it’s about life and I firmly believe readers will never look at a delayed train, a late delivery, or a cup of tea the same way again.”
