There’s nothing more annoying than completing the big move to uni and then realising that you have forgotten to take all those everyday items that everyone takes for granted. To save yourself spending the majority of your student loan on things that you could have easily got your parents to pay for, have a quick read of this list of university essentials and make sure you have them all packed and ready to go.
1. Toilet brush
Everyone knows what a toilet brush is for and why it’s necessary to have one in your bathroom at all times. It’s even more important when you are sharing a toilet with five other guys.
2. Scissors
Everyone forgets scissors! You only realise how handy they are when you don’t have them (and they’re a great shortcut when cutting pizza).
3. Sewing kit
You’d be surprised how often a sewing kit comes in handy at university. Whether it’s sewing on a button to your favorite shirt or fixing your work uniform, this little piece of kit is vital for a student.
4. Hangers
We all have that one mate who has been living out of a suitcase since they first arrived. Let’s be honest, you aren’t going to be doing any ironing at university so at least make sure you have the ability to hang your clothes up: you don’t want to end up with the nickname “wrinkles” for the next three years of your life.
5. Tool kit
Just a few screwdrivers and maybe a small hammer and nails should do the trick. Everyone breaks things (especially after a few drinks) so it’s good to be able to fix the problem before it hits your deposit.
6. Fancy dress costume
You will be invited to loads of parties during your first year of university. Unfortunately, some of those parties will be hosted by annoying people who decide that everyone has to look like an idiot in order to gain entry. It’s best to take a couple of costumes with you and save yourself spending £20 on costumes that don’t fit.
7. Door wedge
Making friends and meeting new people is one of the most exciting things about moving to university. Keeping your door open gives you the chance to talk to new people without having to leave the comfort of your bed!
8. Cheap spare phone
Welcome Week can be a pretty wild time for students looking to have fun and make friends in a new city. Because of this, you don’t really want to be carrying around a brand new £300 iPhone; you’ll find that after a few drinks, things tend to go missing. Having a £10 phone from Tesco just for nights out makes the “morning-after keys, wallet and phone check” a lot less stressful.
9. Common sense
Is it a good idea to do a drunken trolley race down the corridor? No. I know it’s hard but do try to remember your common sense when you make the move to university!
10. Plasters
For when common sense inevitably goes out of the window.
