Architectural Design and Technology

Programme Introduction

The BSc Architectural Design & Technology programme helps students develop systematic and conceptual knowledge of architecture, design, construction and technology. Students study key theories, methods, systems and materials. As a result, they learn how to develop convincing design proposals, understand how buildings are constructed, and consider how assets can be maintained throughout their full life cycle.

The programme also places strong emphasis on sustainability, adaptation and reuse. Therefore, students explore the built environment in relation to scientific, social and cultural change. This helps them understand the role of architecture and construction in a world facing significant environmental and social challenges.

For example, students studying adaptive reuse examine complex retrofit projects. They also gain insight from the Architects and Architectural Technologists involved in those schemes. Through this, they learn how Inclusive Design, or universal access, can offer benefits beyond basic compliance.

In addition, students consider how fire safety, access improvements and other upgrades can strengthen the long-term durability of Listed buildings. These interventions often protect the integrity and maintenance of a building in ways that listing alone cannot achieve.

Students also explore projects where retaining an existing structure plays a key role in reducing carbon impact. In some cases, these structures may appear to have limited historic or architectural value. However, their reuse can make a significant contribution to carbon targets and wider climate responsibilities.

The programme holds accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT). This fulfils the education element required on the journey towards the protected title of Chartered Architectural Technologist (MCIAT).

The programme is also accredited by the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE). This reflects the wide range of professional careers open to graduates.
