Master of Architecture (MArch)
Programme Introduction
The year is 2026, and architects must respond to the challenge of rebuilding their relevance in society. Across the world, people are debating major social, environmental and urban issues. Therefore, Salford students have been asked to contribute to this debate by developing architectural strategies that can make a positive social impact.
The thesis project runs through Design Studio 3 and Design Studio 4. It forms the final capstone element of postgraduate architectural study. Students explore the theme of edge condition, develop a design-based argument, and defend their position within architecture, urbanism and professional practice.
With support from tutors, students create a design thesis question. They then use design studies to explore their aims, objectives, methods and possible outcomes. However, the thesis is not simply another design studio project. Instead, it acts as a multidimensional inquiry and a personal position statement on architectural and urban practice today.
Each project responds to wider sociopolitical, environmental and infrastructural contexts. Students use both scientific and artistic methods to develop research questions, urban strategies and critical approaches. As a result, the thesis brings together the knowledge, skills and critical thinking developed throughout the M.Arch programme.
Although each project includes clear spatial and programmatic constraints, students also think laterally about the role of architecture. For example, they consider patterns of use, social change, environmental responsibility and the transformations that architects can help shape.
Finally, each thesis project develops a strategy that engages with theoretical and philosophical ideas. It also addresses the practical requirements of the project type. Through independent research, testing, experimentation, discussion and critique, students develop architectural positions that integrate design, communication, technical detail, environmental thinking, creativity, construction and theory.
