Salford Law students take on the courtroom through interactive experience at Manchester Crown Court

Back in April, 10 students from our LLB Law and LLB Law with Criminology programmes were given an invaluable opportunity to shadow experienced judges at Manchester Crown Court, enabling them to learn the day-to-day challenges of being a judge today.

Throughout the experience, the students observed the role that judges play in court proceedings and were given the opportunity to meet the judges in their chambers to discuss the cases being heard.

Salford students also benefited from direct engagement with judges, learning the law and sentencing guidelines in court, and how these are translated to real-world court proceedings.

Chloe Helliwell, LLB Law student here at Salford, said: “The Judicial Marshalling Experience at Manchester Crown Court was extremely insightful. I was fortunate to be assigned to the Honorary Recorder of Manchester, Judge Dean KC.

“Having recently studied criminal justice and punishment, the experience was even more valuable as I was able to witness the principles applied in practice at firsthand. Everybody I met during the event was incredibly friendly and happy to answer any questions that I had. I was honoured to be part of it.”

Over the last 10 years, Salford Law students have had the opportunity to observe court proceedings through the University’s partnership with Manchester Crown Court. This unique experience enables students to see legal principles in action beyond the classroom, providing valuable insight into courtroom procedures, judicial decision-making, advocacy and the roles of legal professionals.

Sarah McNeill, Interim Deputy Subject Group Head for Law at Salford Business School, said: “Each year, this experience gives students an exclusive opportunity to learn firsthand from experienced judges in the courtroom.

“The students received positive feedback from the judges at Manchester Crown Court, and it’s a privilege to be surrounded by passionate students who are keen to expand their knowledge and skills in the courtroom. Experiences like this help students to build their confidence in the courtroom and apply their knowledge to real-life cases.

“We would also like to say thank you to the judges and the team at Manchester Crown Court for giving our students access to their courtroom and providing an invaluable experience to our students every year.”
