Meet the expert: Dr Jonathan Owens

Dr Jonathan Owens has always been a Salford ambassador through and through, having started as an undergraduate student, then joining his supervisor on a research project, and later becoming a permanent academic. His passion for Salford has led him on extraordinary journeys - from meeting royalty to redesigning two award-winning modules – and has enabled him to create opportunities for Salford students throughout his career.

Applying general selection theory to business decisions for sustainability 

Dr David Beech, an organisational psychologist and Lecturer in Salford Business School, recently presented his practical research on applying general selection theory to business decision-making for sustainability. His work proposes a socio-ecological framework to help managers understand how different types of decisions and processes can support long-term sustainability. 

Higher education professional services staff as researchers: navigating the liminal space 

Earlier this month, Dr Joanne Caldwell, School Business Manager at the University of Salford, presented her latest research at the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE) Annual Conference. Her paper, “On the Edge but Not There Yet”: Exploring the Liminal Space of Higher Education Professional Services Staff and Research, sparked thoughtful discussion among delegates from around the world.

Meet Nafisa Usman, Lecturer in Financial Technology and Digital Business at Salford Business School. Nafisa is driven by her passion for regulatory innovation, inspiring the next generation of Financial Technology (FinTech) professionals and advancing the use of technology and data to strengthen policy and promote financial inclusion. She was one of the first academics to earn a PhD in Financial Technology and Digital Intelligence at the University of Salford.

Meet Dr Adrian Monaghan, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for MSc International Business here at Salford Business School. Having worked at a French multinational firm, he became inspired to pursue a career in academia and apply his knowledge to teaching students about international business. 

How circular thinking can help businesses cut waste and carbon

Dr Silvia Tedesco, Associate Professor for Sustainability at the University of Salford’s Centre for Sustainable Innovation (CSI), recently delivered an online lecture for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) North West Power Division. Her talk, How can circularity improve business? introduced engineers and industry professionals to new ways of reducing waste and carbon emissions by reusing materials that would normally be thrown away.

At this year’s European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI 2025), Dr Angel Jimenez-Aranda from Salford Business School presented his latest research at the edu4AI workshop. His talk, titled “A Framework for Building a Secure, Resilient and AI-based Digital Future for SMEs”, explored how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can embrace artificial intelligence (AI) while staying secure, resilient, and inclusive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
