How to prepare for life at university over the summer

If you’ve finished your assignments and exams for the summer and are waiting for your results to come through, you might be wondering what you can do to get prepared for life as a Salford student.

My first tip is to do your research. If you’re moving away from home, you might want to start thinking about your travel plans, researching the local area, and also what different events and societies you’d like to get involved with. I moved to Salford from a small town on the coast nearly 300 miles away from home, so to say I had a culture shock was an understatement.

Our University will be hosting a bunch of activities during Welcome Week in September, so keep an eye out on our pages for more info on that. Likewise Salford SU also host their own events which you can find out about on their website.

One of the best parts of starting university is treating yourself to a shopping spree! Check with your accommodation to see what you’re allowed to take with you and what will be provided. Things like cutlery, bedding and maybe a few new outfits you can show off! (you know, the essentials)

There are also lots of really important admin tasks for you to get a head start with. Things like setting up a student bank account, learning how to cook, and registering with the on-campus GP. I promise these aren’t as boring as they sound and will ensure you can make the most of your time at Salford when you get here. For example, many student bank accounts offer different perks like an interest-free overdraft or a railcard. Do your research and see what works for your needs.

That being said, make sure you take time to enjoy yourself! You’ve worked hard to get to this point and this summer is a great chance to make some memories before you start. You might choose to work and earn some extra money or just sit in your room and watch nothing but daytime TV, but both are just as good and brilliant ways to spend your time (I did the latter if that helps).
