Professor Boardman is Chair of Applied Physics in the School of Computing, Science and Engineering has an international reputation for his work on surface plasmons and guided wave optics, especially nonlinear waves and solitons.
He is the leading theorist looking at nonlinear guided magneto-optic waves in metamaterials and Co-Chair of the SPIE Photonics Europe conference, which is held biannually.
His latest honour is to be invited to sit on the ESPRC Physical Sciences Materials Prioritisation Panel, which steers the peer review process and ensures that research funding is allocated according to quality.
Allan will be responsible for the selection of proposals, most notable from his areas of expertise in photonics and optics.
Professor Boardman said: “This is not only a great honour to me but to the University. The EPSRC is the main UK agency for funding research and training in engineering and the physical sciences, investing more than £800 million a year.”
During the term two other distinguished scientists were appointed to international posts: Dr Stephen Parnell was appointed to an EU scientific panel on behalf of the European Food Safety Authority; Professor Stefano Mariani became an official adviser to the US Government on Pew Marine Conservation Programme.
