Sensory Led School for the Blind

This project proposes a sensory-led school for blind and partially sighted students, designed around clarity, independence, and safe navigation. The building is organised around a central circulation spine, creating a simple and legible route through the school.

This spine acts as both the main movement route and a tactile wayfinding system. Textured wall surfaces, floor engravings, material changes, and acoustic cues help students understand and navigate the building through touch, sound, and spatial awareness.

The site is divided into secure teaching areas and controlled public-facing facilities, including a café, library, rentable classrooms, and sports hall. This allows parts of the building to support community use and generate income outside school hours, while maintaining safeguarding and clear separation for students during the school day.

Throughout the school, tactile routes, braille signage, varied thresholds, acoustic control, and carefully managed natural light are used to reduce confusion and support independent movement.

The proposal demonstrates how inclusive architectural design can combine spatial planning, material detail, and environmental comfort to create a calm, safe, and accessible learning environment for blind and partially sighted students.
