The Memory, The Journey

The Memory, The Journey explores the future of the Working Class Movement Library as a civic and community space within a changing social and cultural context. Rather than treating preservation as a fixed act, the project uses architecture to support renewal, reinterpretation, and public engagement.

The proposal recognises that the building’s history, including its past alterations, cannot be undone. It does not attempt to return the library to an idealised version of the past. Instead, it treats memory as something active within contemporary life. Through spatial reconfiguration, renewal, and recreation, the design brings together themes of loss, change, and continuity while protecting the cultural value of the library.

The building operates as both an exhibition space and a civic space. Its design communicates ideas of absence, remembrance, and transformation. A rotating architectural form creates visual connections in three directions, allowing the building to engage with different parts of the city and strengthening the relationship between movement, memory, and site.

The landscape strategy also explores transformation through stages of loss. It moves from complete form, to partial demolition, and then to rubble, reflecting the history of Christ Church and its transition from presence to absence. This sequence forms The Journey of Demolition, a key spatial route within Acton Square.

The route connects Peel Park, the Working Class Movement Library, and Acton Square car park, which once stood on the site of Christ Church. Together, these elements create a reflective civic landscape where architecture, memory, and urban history are made visible.
