Bricks of Gaza

Bricks of Gaza proposes an expansion of the Working Class Movement Library in Salford, creating more space for educational, creative, and political exploration. The project also improves the existing Jubilee House building, helping it reach its full potential as a civic and cultural resource.

The Working Class Movement Library preserves socialist and working-class history through books, archives, and artefacts. It attracts students, researchers, protesters, and educators. This proposal builds on that role by creating new spaces that also welcome artists, creatives, and community groups.

The design is inspired by Palestine, particularly the erasure of Gaza and its history. Fighting for oppressed communities is central to the working-class movement, and this is already reflected in the library’s archives on Irish and South African histories. Bricks of Gaza extends this political and cultural legacy through architecture.

Palestinian arches, colours, materials, and spatial traditions are woven throughout the expansion. The building is designed as a foundation for protest, with spaces for education, organisation, and creative production. Its location on a main road opposite the University of Salford allows protest and public engagement to move directly from Jubilee House into the street.

The project’s strength lies in the consistency of its concept. Each design element is linked to themes of protest, Palestine, memory, and resistance. The external arched walkway is a key feature, using light, colour, and shadow to create a powerful architectural experience that connects cultural identity with collective action.
