River Island Ecologies

River Island Ecologies is a climate-responsive architectural proposal located on Mbamu Island in the Republic of Congo. The project explores how architecture can strengthen the relationship between water, community, and landscape while responding to seasonal flooding along the Congo River.

Inspired by local fishing traditions, Kongo cosmology, and the everyday life of river communities, the proposal brings together a floating fishermen’s market, lightweight public pavilions, and elevated residential blocks. Together, these elements create an adaptive river settlement that supports local livelihoods, community life, and environmental resilience.

The floating market provides space for local trade, fish processing, and social interaction. Built from modular buoyant platforms, it rises and falls with changing water levels. The fishermen’s tripod pavilion reinterprets traditional Congolese fishing structures as shaded public gathering spaces connected to the waterfront.

Further inland, elevated residential blocks are positioned on higher ground to provide safer, climate-responsive homes. These are organised around shared courtyards and communal spaces, encouraging social connection while responding to the risks of flooding.

The project uses passive environmental strategies, including natural ventilation, daylighting, deep roof overhangs, and locally sourced materials such as timber and compressed earth blocks. These choices reduce environmental impact while improving thermal comfort.

Rather than resisting flooding, River Island Ecologies embraces seasonal change. The project transforms water into a catalyst for community life, resilience, ecological awareness, and cultural identity.
