Thanks to our Graduate Interns

For three months Graduate Interns Ansar Ali, Assad Mahmood and Jasi Ahmed have worked with the Environmental Sustainability Team, supporting us with various activities, in particular the events for Go Green Salford. We would like to thank them for all of their hard work and enthusiasm, as well as the fresh ideas they have brought to the team. Before they left we asked them to tell us about their experience with us, their interests and what they hope to do in the future.

Hello, I’m Ansar. I studied Business and Tourism Management and during my internship I worked with the Environmental Sustainability Team as a Sustainable Travel Assistant. My role was to update all relevant travel data on campus and to encourage more sustainable methods of travel to university. At the same time, I worked closely with the delivery of events related to Go Green Salford, and helped with the communication process of the activities involved. read more

Green Impact 2014/15 !

Welcome back staff and students to another big year at the University of Salford! The sustainability team have a number of exciting initiatives planned for this year including the university’s involvement in Green Impact for a second year.

The team want to firstly say a big thank you to Charlie Spring for all the hard work she put in during 2013/14. Charlie spearheaded the inaugural year of Green Impact which was a huge success and a real tribute to Charlie’s work. She got eleven staff teams on board and supported them throughout the year. She also recruited and trained a number of students as Project Assistants and Auditors providing them with valuable transferrable skills and sustainability knowledge to assist them in their employment. We are lucky to be keeping Charlie within the university where she will be undertaking a PhD in food waste so we look forward to seeing her around. Thanks Charlie! read more

Cycle to Work scheme, Bike Doctor & future improvement plans

Cycle to WorkThe University’s Cycle to Work Scheme will open for applications from next Tuesday, April 1, providing employees with an opportunity to save money on the purchase of a new bike.

As part of our commitment to encouraging and facilitating sustainable methods of travel, the scheme provides colleagues with the use of a bike and safety equipment.  The cost is then paid over a twelve-month period.

There’s a further financial incentive to take part, as the scheme is an approved salary-sacrifice initiative, meaning there are significant tax and National Insurance savings available. Many colleagues have joined the scheme since it was first introduced in September 2011.  The closing date for applications is Thursday, 17 April 2014. read more

Bike maintenance workshop a wheel success

DSC00115On Tuesday February 11, University students and staff took place in a free bicycle maintenance workshop as part of Go Green Week 2014.

Cycle mechanics from the National Cycling Academy in Whitefield came onto campus to pass on invaluable skills and techniques for keeping a bicycle in good shape. Puncture repair and chain maintenance were a couple of the key skills demonstrated by the mechanics as part of basic roadside repair.

Charlie Spring described how enjoyable and useful the session was: “It was a great way to meet colleagues and turn good intentions into useable skills. A general groan arose when we realised we’d have to broach our fear of taking off the back wheel, but Alex was very encouraging and we all ended up with dirty hands and confidence in our skills to defy punctures, select the right kind of lube and, crucially, get that back wheel off and on (and facing the right way!). I can’t wait for the next one!” read more
