Summertime at uni can feel a bit different to other parts of the academic year, especially if you’re on break or you’re one of the small number of students still on campus. For some this period feels great, but it can also feel a bit lonely.
There are lots of ways to re-connect without spending a ton of money and travelling far. Whether you’re wanting some solo time, something to do with friends or an opportunity to meet new people, there’s lots of activities to get involved with at the University, across the city and from home. See what you could do to make connections below.
1. Volunteer
Volunteering is a great way to connect with your local community as well as enhancing your employability skills and building confidence. Volunteering is usually flexible and requires few hours a week/month of your time, meaning you can work it around your schedule.
We put volunteering roles on Handshake and you can contact the SU for internal opportunities at students-union@salford.ac.uk. If you need any further support with volunteering, our Careers & Enterprise team can help. Find support on our Careers webpage.
2. Become your own Dora the Explorer
We know that spending time outdoors and connecting to nature is good for your wellbeing, so why not take yourself out on a walk? If you find it hard to get yourself out the door, especially in the rainy and cold weather, heading out on a different route or bringing a friend along can be a great way to get your walking shoes on.
In Manchester and Salford, you can take nice routes around MediaCity, green spots like Peel Park and the canals. If trails are your thing, you could explore local art on the Irwell Sculpture Tour. If you’re not in the city, have a look at local walks in your area.
3. Connect with past alumni at Talking Salford
Each episode of the Talking Salford Podcast allows you to delve into the unique stories of our alumni. So far, guests have included graduates who have gone on to create impactful TV shows, change the music industry, make globally successful businesses and much more. With over 19 episodes, you have a few to choose from! Get comfortable and listen on YouTube, Acast or your favourite podcasting platform.
4. Meet others on Umii app
If you’re looking to connect with like-minded students, Umii is the place to be. This free app matches your course, interests and societies with current Salford students. To get started just download the app on Google Play or via the App Store and set up your profile.

5. Take a culture trip and explore a museum
Step out of your world for a moment and head into the history of another. There’s lots of free and interesting museums here in Salford. On Peel Park campus you can find Salford Museum and Art Gallery and the Working Class Movement Library. Over at MediaCity you can find The Lowry Gallery and Imperial War Museum North. Plus, there’s Ordsall Hall, the oldest building in Salford with a beautiful garden and cafe.
We can’t forget about Manchester either! The Students’ Union’s have a video guide to museums you can find around the city, including seek previews inside 👀.
6. Get active at the Sports Centre
Keeping active is a great way to connect with yourself. You can make this a solo or group date as our Sports Centre has a gym, sports hall and weekly group classes – all within your student membership. Find out more about memberships on our website.
7. Get involved in uni events
Although this time of year can feel quieter on campus, there’s still events happening! These events are great opportunities to meet other students who have a similar interest to you. Keep updated on the Student Hub and over on Instagram. Highlights coming up include:
8. Explore events happening in your local area
If the uni events aren’t quite your thing, look at what’s happening around you. You could find new shows, interesting exhibitions and unique outings like a cheese tour! A lot of councils and cities have a dedicated event webpage, just search what’s on and your location.
