How to stand out from the crowd and land your dream job!

For me, leaving University was one of the hardest challenges I have had to face so far. Having previously studied at a small independent faith school with a population less than that of a coal miner’s convention – it was hard to embrace the fact I would be competing for a place in this crowded digital environment. With hundreds of people graduating alongside me in Greater Manchester alone, and an extra few hundred graduating each year thereafter what are the chances of me being noticed? How would I ever stand out from the crowd and land my dream job?

Thousands of pounds and several hundred caffeine induced beverages later and I found myself standing looking deep in to this digital precipice with an abundance of career options available. A fantastic new parachute-shaped degree strapped to my back – but is a degree alone enough to stand out from the crowd and help land your dream job?

Why study Digital Marketing at Salford?

Why study digital marketing at Salford // Nim Tennakoon, MSc Digital Marketing student

Nim Tennakoon, MSc Digital Marketing student

Before I started my Search and Social Media Marketing module (SSMM), I did not consider optimising my digital profiles or worry about the ranking of my name in Search Engine Results Page (SERPs). Knowing what I know now this is one reason as to why I study Digital Marketing at Salford.

Most of us have social media profiles such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. I actually have more than 5000 friends on Facebook! Even my Facebook page has more than 2000 likes. On Instagram I have nearly 3500 followers. For a long time I was active online posting around twice a day. But only recently I have started to understand the theoretical and financial values behind it.

Once I began to appreciate the theory of social media marketing I became fascinated. Did you know I am what you might call in digital marketing a micro-influencer?

It’s true! I have now even read some studies that suggest users like myself with smaller follower numbers actually have higher engagement rates on social media compared to some Megastars. Therefore, people like me with similar followings can be of huge benefit to online brands.

Starting out in #online marketing?

Do you need to join an online marketing course to get the right tools for your business? For anyone who grew up in the last twenty years or so, digital or online marketing is just another thing that happens. Yet for the rest of us (those with a few more wrinkles) it’s still a major phenomenon that has changed the way businesses of all shapes and sizes go about publicising their goods and services to potential customers locally or in the wider world.

Despite online marketing having been around since the nineteen nineties (arguably earlier) there are still many small and medium sized companies that are out of touch with the digital world and who require guidance in order to make full use of advertising and selling online. Unsurprisingly this has seen the emergence of many new digital agencies specialising in online and wider forms of digital marketing, such as marketing through mobile phone apps and interactive media.

Jennifer Faughnan on how to use Twitter to find a job

Jennifer Faughnan

Twitter. A place where people update the world on the mundane occurrences of their every day lives in 140 characters or less, right? Well it doesn’t have to be –  it could actually be a good place to find a job!

I’m a MSc Digital Marketing student at the University of Salford Business School and recently started employment at PushON, an award winning Digital Marketing and eCommerce agency in Manchester. How did I land this amazing opportunity I hear you ask? Why, on Twitter, of course!

In this post I will share my personal experience of how to use Twitter to find a job. It began when I shared an article about how great a job as a “Social Media Manager” sounded. That was it – I simply shared my opinion on something I was passionate about.

You might have heard some people talk about a time where products and services find you based on your interests – well that time is now! And this is how it happened on Twitter for me:

Digital Business Maturity Model: The future of #DigitalBusiness

31 October 2014
Gordon Fletcher

Gordon Fletcher

At the Centre for Digital Business we have recently been discussing what digital business is, the future of digital business and ways to understand the stages of digital development for any business.

The contrasts between Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and Large Multi-national Organisations (LMOs) are usually quite obvious in any comparative survey of business maturity or readiness.

But, digital is different.

For example, size, in terms of any conventional measure such as the number of employees, annual turnover or worse – in the first few years for a digital start-up at least – profit, become a bit confused in the world of digital business.

Sivashankar Chandrasekhar

Sivashankar Chandrasekhar, Salford MBA student

Hello leaders of the future! I am Sivashankar from India, currently studying on the Salford MBA course at Salford Business School, University of Salford. In this Salford MBA review I have quite a lot to share with you – if you are aspiring to do one of the most prestigious post-graduate courses in business and management – Master of Business Administration (MBA).

An MBA is certainly not for the faint-hearted – you must have a minimum of three years full-time post study work experience with evidence of managerial responsibility. This is in addition to a good honours degree or equivalent in a business related subject. Once you managed these requirements you have to choose your pathways. For example, the Salford MBA offers you the option to specialise in Digital Business, Sports Business or just go for a generic MBA.

As a student who is mid-way through my MBA course, I took some time off to reflect on why I chose Salford Business School instead of other very strong options. This is my Salford MBA review of my experience so far.

Here are some of the reasons that led me choose this particular business school and you can decide whether I was right or wrong.

Malawi Needs a Digital Marketer: Salford Business School can help you

Malawi in Africa

Malawi in Africa (CC) By TUBS

In Malawi the field of digital marketing remains relatively underdeveloped and neglected. For me, someone who is passionate about digital marketing, this is a challenge to develop my career in this area.

The universities and educational opportunities in Malawi are likewise unable to help me to fulfil my career ambitions. In contrast to Malawi, the United Kingdom (UK) based businesses place a great emphasis on digital marketing. The marketing techniques are accordingly advanced and well-established and are taught well in business schools.

I am confident that having exhausted many of the training opportunities available in my country, the resources available at Salford Business School’s MSc Marketing program are ideal for taking my career to the next level as a digital marketer.

Why did I choose Salford Business School to develop my digital marketing skills? Read more…..
