Do you need to join an online marketing course to get the right tools for your business? For anyone who grew up in the last twenty years or so, digital or online marketing is just another thing that happens. Yet for the rest of us (those with a few more wrinkles) it’s still a major phenomenon that has changed the way businesses of all shapes and sizes go about publicising their goods and services to potential customers locally or in the wider world.

Despite online marketing having been around since the nineteen nineties (arguably earlier) there are still many small and medium sized companies that are out of touch with the digital world and who require guidance in order to make full use of advertising and selling online. Unsurprisingly this has seen the emergence of many new digital agencies specialising in online and wider forms of digital marketing, such as marketing through mobile phone apps and interactive media.

MSc Project Management placement experience to employment - Suhan Setty

MSc Project Management placement experience to employment – Suhan Setty

I would like to tell you how my MSc Project Management placement was a springboard to full-time employment.

I am a mechanical engineer. It has always been a dream of mine to find employment here in England because I perceive the UK to be one of the world’s most technologically advanced countries.

I did a 6 month of work placement experience in Street Crane Company  Limited which I started in October 2015 as a part of my MSc Business Innovation Project module.

Street Crane Company is the UK’s largest overhead crane manufacturer. They have a history spanning more than 70 years and their products are synonymous with quality and reliability. The business was founded back in 1946 with capital of just £88 which they used to create an 800 square foot workshop and install basic machinery. Nowadays it is a £50 million turnover company, producing around 400 complete cranes and 2500 hoists and crane kits every year.

Jennifer Faughnan on how to use Twitter to find a job

Jennifer Faughnan

Twitter. A place where people update the world on the mundane occurrences of their every day lives in 140 characters or less, right? Well it doesn’t have to be –  it could actually be a good place to find a job!

I’m a MSc Digital Marketing student at the University of Salford Business School and recently started employment at PushON, an award winning Digital Marketing and eCommerce agency in Manchester. How did I land this amazing opportunity I hear you ask? Why, on Twitter, of course!

In this post I will share my personal experience of how to use Twitter to find a job. It began when I shared an article about how great a job as a “Social Media Manager” sounded. That was it – I simply shared my opinion on something I was passionate about.

You might have heard some people talk about a time where products and services find you based on your interests – well that time is now! And this is how it happened on Twitter for me:

Exercising Enlightened Leadership

Dr R Balasubramaniam; enlightened leaders develop self awareness and self enquiry

Dr R Balasubramaniam

One of the joys of working at the University of Salford is the opportunity to go to a variety of interesting lectures. Today, the Business School welcomed Dr R Balasubramaniam to share his theories on Enlightened Leadership. It was a fascinating talk on how self-awareness and self-enquiry creates mindful leadership, based on understanding what drives us and what drives others.

This is a synopsis of his theories.

“Human progress and development affects people from all walks of life and success in any field now demands a multidimensional and comprehensive perspective.  Governments and other Social Institutions are increasingly faced with preparing Leaders to operate in the social sector.  As they acquire competencies and knowledge about different subjects, many find themselves inadequately prepared for taking on leadership positions in this sector.  They are challenged by the complexity and diversity that a rapidly changing world presents them with.

My placement experience with Schibsted Media Group (SMG) in Oslo

Pernille Doxrud - Placement experience Schibsted Media networking Oslo

Pernille Doxrud, MSc Project Management

In January 2015 I began studying an MSc. in Project Management. One of the reasons I chose to study at University of Salford Business School, was the possibility of a placement experience in a company whilst writing the dissertation. I believe that the practical work experience you can gain from this postgraduate programme is unique; it gives you a different angle on the dissertation, as well as possibly opening doors to permanent employment.

Higher Education courses widen your horizons, make you a more aware person. But, whilst education for general knowledge is helpful, practical work placement experience is getting more and more important in the competitive work environment. It is often challenging to find a first job after being a student for many years. A work placement will improve your CV and gives you an opportunity to stand out from the crowd.

The Salford MBA: Lê Tuấn Hùng’s journey

1 March 2016
Le Hung at Salford University

Le Hung, The Salford MBA student

Lê Tuấn Hùng came to Salford Business School from Vietnam to study for The Salford MBA. He had originally studied at the University of Transport and Communications in Hanoi, Vietnam, majoring in Construction Economics and after graduating, worked for a shipping company as a sales executive.

“My main job was to search for potential clients and convince them to use my company’s services, while dealing with and keeping existing clients the company had assigned. In this time, I achieved many new and well-known clients for my company. After that, I moved on to work for a Japanese freight forwarder as a sales manager.”

At this stage, Hùng realized that, if he wanted to progress his career, he would have to return to study to update his skills and to fill the gaps in his business knowledge.

“I realised that the practical experience and knowledge I had gained were not enough for the personal development of my career. At this time I also decided to study in a developed country to acquire this knowledge in the best way.”

The photoshoots are all taking place on the Peel Park campus, and your Programme Director will take you from class when it is time for your session. Claire Angel, our Student Progression Assistant, (who was a photographer in an earlier life!) is manning the camera, and staff from the School are on hand to make sure it all runs smoothly.

Salford Business School will be providing you all with an actual print for your wall, as well as a digital copy, as a memento of your time with us.

Blogging for business: #SalfordBSchool at the finals of the #UKBA16

6 January 2016
Spiros Kontogiannis

Spiros Kontogiannis – MSc Marketing Alumnus

What did an MSc Marketing student do two years ago? The first blog post went live on this blog and at the time, I was a Marketing student working on my internship at Salford Business School. I was practising my business blogging skills by helping to develop a strategy for the Business School blog.

Now, fast forward two years and the blog has been nominated for the UK Blog Awards 2016 and has over 110 authors, 157 blog posts, resulting in over 100k page-views from global readership of 202 countries. And what about myself? Well, the internship at Salford Business School helped me to get a job in the industry – I now work as a Content Strategist at customedialabs.

So, my internship has made a direct impact on my career choice – and the content shared on the blog has triggered wider social media conversations on multiple social media channels – Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube – helping other students, academics and business owners to learn and further refine their understanding of blogging for business purposes.

At the outset an important role for the blog was to allow academics to share research findings, current students to share their views and develop their own business blogging skills as well as alumni – like myself now – to come back to school and share my business experience after graduation and keep in-touch with the #SalfordBSchool community. Has this vision materialised?
