What is social enterprise? Starting a social enterprise business is a challenge for people who have a mission with a social purpose but also want to create a profit. Social enterprise describes how businesses achieve social, economic, community and cultural improvement through their existence.

These companies can be for-profit or non-profit organisations that create common activities to help human and environmental well-being. Most companies produce products or services that generate revenue and reinvest it into society through job creation, health care, cultural needs and the environment.

Block teaching is my greatest experience at Salford Business School

28 July 2014

For me, a university experience should be: rewarding, memorable and life changing. On my arrival to the UK to study for a Masters Degree in Marketing at the University of Salford, I was always thinking if I will be able to adjust and fit in to the new educational system.

I recall my experience that I had during my first MSc program that I studied at Heriot Watt University in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Although Heriot Watt is a British university, the mode of study was adopted to the UAE model of teaching and learning. I realised that the educational system in the UAE and here in the UK will be entirely different.

During my first days here in Manchester, I met with other students at Salford Business School, asking them questions and making enquires about the way things are done over here. I was given different responses from people and I was never satisfied with their replies. There were a number of fellow international students all of whom have different expectations of what study life is like in the UK and at Salford Business School in particular.

Well, I am now in my second module and I can tell you what it is like…

I have been privileged to be a part of MSc Marketing at the University of Salford Business School and I am passionate about social media. Being an international student from Nigeria I feel that it is the right place to develop my passion into a career.

Social media is gradually emerging in Nigeria, although the adoption rate is not yet at the same level as it is in the UK.

Social media marketing is bringing about a drastic change in the way that organisations engage with their stakeholders. Salford Business School introduced me to the latest thinking in the use of social media.

Why do I think it was the right move?

5 Reasons To Study MSc Marketing at Salford Business School

Media City UK Campus

Media City UK Campus

I’ve been studying MSc Marketing at Salford Business School for seven months now and thought it was about time to do a bit of cheerleading.

Not with pom poms or anything, but don’t they say the pen is mightier? Here are five points to prove it:

1. SOCIAL MEDIA STUDY

When I decided to leave my decent and not badly paid job in London to get onto a Masters marketing programme and into a load of debt, it was essential from the off that the course covered social media marketing.

Amazingly, the University of Salford was one of very few universities whose masters marketing course included a module in Search and Social Media Marketing, and this was the first thing that turned my head.

Now I’m here and studying the Search and Social Media Marketing module (#SSMMUoS), I know I made the right move. I’m even beginning to get to grips with Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)!

On 18 July 2014, I attended in the graduation ceremony of my friend who graduated from Salford Business School. The ceremony was located at Media City UK, which is located in the most beautiful riverside of Manchester – Salford Quays.

It makes me recall my graduation ceremony last year, as a international student, my parents haven’t got the chance to join my graduation, it was a big pity for me. But one of my best friends called Roy joined my graduation ceremony, it made me so happy and moving, because he was not an international student based in the UK. He studies in China, it’s hard to get visa for the UK, and the flight ticket is not cheap for a Chinese student.

“The only source of knowledge is experience” ~ Albert Einstein

I remember waiting anxiously for two months for the day I will embark on my journey to the UK to study for a Masters Degree at the University of Salford Business School (SBS). As an international student leaving my country for the first time to study abroad, I admit I was a bit unsure of what to expect.

To my greatest surprise and relief, I was warmly welcomed at the airport by the Student Life team and then taken straight to the school. Immediately I was plunged into the orientation madness which included the registration with the Salford Business School and I felt right at home. With much anticipation, I attended all the welcome events, went on a tour of the University of Salford and listened with great expectations at the course induction and talks from the program director emphasizing the need to attempt and submit all assignments on time. I was eager to learn more than I had heard.

International students making a great learning experience at #SalfordUni

Since my arrival at Salford Business School I have learned a number of things, but one stood out for me and it is one that I did not expect away from home – that is international students friendship. There are a number of fellow international students – some of my new found friends are from Nigeria, Vietnam, China and all over Europe. All of them are studying and socialising at the University of Salford – developing great friendships and we are collectively enriching our learning experience.

I have learned a lot in the formal lectures, tutorials and practical sessions, but the cultural diversity of  other students studying on the same course added that unexpected extra dimension of international cultural awareness. I have made many friends and I am able to shared and experience multiple international cultures, ideas and opinions from different parts of the world.

Friendship provides harmony whilst studying, but it also offers a great resource since a number of modules during my degree rely on group work. Working in international groups allows me to develop team working abilities which are so important in today’s globalized world where business is increasingly relying on international trade.

Salford Business School Graduation – Mission Impossible

I graduated! I am now officially a Bachelor of Science (BSc) Business and Management!

I have to say that it is the first ever graduation that I had. I missed Middle and High School graduation due to all sorts of reasons. For me Middle and High School is just the difference between level 17th of hell and 18th of hell. Well, we did not actually have a graduation that made us feel really happy.

My undergraduate graduation at Salford Business School on Friday 18th July is where I felt that my effort during the course has been acknowledged and celebrated.

I have to admit, I really did struggle at the very beginning as I could barely follow what Dr. xxx said in the lecture. I had no friends and my parents were 5600 mile away, basically I got nothing but myself. I started to live a life myself and I think this is all common for all international students, especially Chinese students (due to all sorts of cultural reasons, not quite sure about it).
