Scholar Spotlight: Ninna

Scholarship recipient, Ninna

Meet Ninna, a determined and passionate first year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Salford, whose journey is as inspiring as her ambitions. Ninna is a recipient of the Gittins Family Charitable Trust scholarship.

We caught up with Ninna to discuss the impact of their donor-funded scholarship, we hope you enjoy the read.

Why Mechanical Engineering?

Ninna was drawn to Salford for its strong industry ties, especially with companies like Morrison, where she saw an opportunity to bridge academic learning with real-world experience. ‘Salford’s connection with industry leaders is what really stood out to me,’ she shares. ‘I hope to work with Morrison one day, and studying here brings me closer to that goal.’

A maker’s paradise

One of Ninna’s favourite places on campus is the MakerSpace, a hands-on hub where creativity meets cutting-edge technology. ‘It’s an incredible environment,’ she says. ‘The technicians are so supportive. After training, I can use the machines to bring my ideas to life. Not many universities offer this kind of hands-on experience, and I really value that.’

The power of a scholarship

Ninna’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Having moved to the UK and lived in foster care since the age of 16, she’s faced more than her fair share of obstacles. ‘Living independently without support has been really tough,’ she explains. ‘That’s why I applied for a donor-funded scholarship. It’s not just about the money, it’s about stability, focus, and the chance to succeed.’

The scholarship has been a game-changer. ‘It’s allowed me to concentrate on my studies without constantly worrying about finances. I’ve been able to join the Salford Racing Club and work on building an F1 car, something I never imagined I’d get to do!’

 More than just financial support

Beyond the financial relief, the scholarship has opened doors to new experiences and connections. From engagement days to networking opportunities, Ninna has found a community that supports her growth. ‘It’s helped me meet other students, learn more about my field, and feel like I truly belong here.’

A message of thanks

When asked if there’s anything else she’d like to share, Ninna’s response is heartfelt: ‘I just want to say how grateful I am. This scholarship has made such a difference in my life.’
